Crystal Speer
Programs Director
Crystal Speer has worked in the field of corrections for almost 20 years. During that time, she has gained a broad range of experience, including behavioral health case management, juvenile intake and assessment, intensive supervision probation, and correctional facility programming. Crystal enjoys helping facilitate staff development trainings and was also previously a member of the Crisis Resolution (Hostage Negotiation) Team for the El Dorado Correctional Facility. In her current position as Programs Director for the Kansas Department of Corrections, Crystal provides oversight of cognitive-based programming for all KDOC facilities across the state. This includes monitoring contracts, administering grant projects, serving as a liaison between KDOC and providers, and coordinating quality and ongoing training/support for providers. She is also responsible for staying up-to-date on the most current research to ensure programming remains effective and evidence-based. Her focus is to ensure all correctional facility residents in Kansas have the opportunity to participate in impactful, risk/needs driven programming, regardless of length of sentence or housing assignment (restrictive housing, general population, clinic, etc.). Crystal continuously works to find new programming options, increase access to programs, and to expand the peer mentor training program in Kansas facilities.
