Chief John Johnson, Ph.D.

Chief John W. Johnson, Ph.D., is an experienced 28-year veteran of the Miami-Dade Corrections and Rehabilitation Department (MDCR). He began his career in September 1995 as a correctional officer after graduating from Correctional Officer training Class# 78 with the distinction of the highest academic average.
In March 2010, John was appointed to his first command staff position, Correctional Captain. Whileserving this rank, he managed the Pre-trial Detention Center, a 1200-bed facility (2010-2012). John’s promotion to Corrections Division Chief occurred in March 2017. He was assigned to oversee theProgram Services Division, encompassing the Reentry and Program Services Bureau, Boot Camp Program, Pre-trial Release Bureau, and Monitor Release Bureau. Each noted office has specific functions supporting the MDCR mission of preparing individuals for successful reintegration into the community. Besides Miami-Dade County’s efforts, Chief Johnson advocates for the detention of employees and inmates nationally. He has briefed congressional members on emerging jail issues such as Trauma-Informed Incarceration, Gender-Informed Inmate Management, the emergence of jails as mental health
institutions, and eradicating sexual assault in correctional settings.
Chief Johnson has maintained professional certifications with the American Correctional Association (ACA), Auditor, Florida State University, Public Manager, and AJA, Jail Manager. John has served and currently serves in leadership roles in national organizations, including Delegate for the ACA (2016 - 2017), the board of directors for JDI, and the board of directors and President of AJA (2009 - 2021). Chief Johnson’s educational achievements include a bachelor’s degree in public administration, a master’s degree in business administration, and a Ph.D. in Public Safety Leadership.
